Born August 10th, 1973, at 11:11am to Miriam and Robert Monroe, Sable arrived as a surprise to a couple who thought they were long done having children. Somehow, they found themselves with a newborn and three boys already running around the house. The twins, Aaron and Anthony, were six, and Robert Jr. was ten. She the only girl among three brothers.Growing up with three older brothers meant Sable learned to hold her own pretty quickly. She was stubborn, opinionated, and never particularly good at keeping her mouth closed when it mattered most. She often found herself grounded because of it, and it’s where she developed a love for books, stuck in her room with nothing else to do. Next came theater … drama classes, school productions, and community plays. She graduated from university with a degree in English literature and eventually became a professor, juggling teaching, theater, and whatever else she managed to squeeze into her very busy schedule. Then she met Weston. They dated for a while before Sable found herself pregnant. Weston wanted nothing to do with it and left her then and there. Thankfully, she had her family and friends by her side. And it certainly wasn’t how she’d imagined becoming a mother, but she managed. She continued teaching and raised her daughter, Ashley. At thirty-two, she moved to Australia with her daughter for a man she’d been dating long-distance for nearly two years. His job required frequent travel, so he visited whenever he could … usually once or twice a month. Eventually, though, things came to an end. At thirty-eight, Sable finally admitted to herself, after so long, that she wasn’t actually interested in men. Not really. Looking back now, she’d always been attracted to women, but she’d spent years convincing herself otherwise without ever questioning it too closely. It took her longer than she’d cares to admit that it took so long to put all the pieces together. She ended the relationship but stayed in Australia, unwilling to uproot her daughter’s life all over again.Dating women turned out to be a bit of a disaster. Between terrible dates, one-night stands, and women who seemed determined to make her their friend rather than anything else, Sable was beginning to think she was better off alone. Then, at thirty-nine, she met Arden. Her future wife.A friend of hers had a band, and five minutes before they were due onstage, their lead singer came down with food poisoning. With everything set up and no time to cancel, Sable agreed to fill in. Having spent years doing theatre, musicals, and community plays, she wasn’t exactly a stranger to performing in front of an audience, though singing with a band was a different matter. After the show, she bumped into a blonde and managed to spill beer all over her own shirt. A brilliant first impression, honestly. However, they got talking, traded theatrical jokes, and flirted. Well, Arden flirted. Sable flirted too, apparently, though she had absolutely no idea she was doing it. They agreed to get dessert somewhere down the road, and one thing led to another. They ended up in bed together, and Sable had a very good night. A very, very, very good night.Three days later, she was filling in for a fellow professor when she spotted Arden sitting in her classroom. Turns out the woman she’d slept with was one of her students. That was an interesting discovery, to put it mildly. Despite the rather inconvenient circumstances, they continued seeing each other, and three years later, they were married. For a while, things were good. Sable loved Arden, and they built a life together. When Arden was thirty and Sable was forty-five, they welcomed their daughter, IvannaBy the time Sable was forty-nine, she’d spent nearly two years feeling increasingly distant from her wife. She still loved Arden, but something between them had changed, and neither seemed particularly good at fixing it. Instead of dealing with it like an adult, Sable had an affair. She hadn’t planned on it happening, but just did. And the sex was fantastic. Absolutely, ridiculously fantastic. Which, in hindsight, was a rather stupid thing to let herself get caught up in when she had a wife and a family at home. She started lying about where she was going and became increasingly sneaky about it. Eventually, Arden caught on and discovered the affair. There wasn’t much to salvage after that. Sable had lied to her, had betrayed her, and had given her every reason to walk away. And that’s exactly what Arden did, exactly that. Sable couldn’t blame her, although that didn’t make it any easier to accept. She’d made her choices, and now she had to reap the consequences.
At fifty, a year after the divorce, Sable regretted the whole damn thing. She missed Arden more than she’d expected and hated herself even more for being the reason they weren’t together anymore. She still loved her, and that was part of the problem. She could blame the distance, the affair, or the state of their marriage all she liked, but none of it changed the fact that she’d hurt the woman she wanted to spend the rest of her life with and that’s something she could never take back.
